Bumbling in Burford

Saturday 19th May (end of 4th week)

The beautiful town of Burford on the river Windrush has the following record in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle: “A.D 752. This year Cuthred, king of the West Saxons, in the 12th year of his reign, fought at Burford, against Æthelbald king of the Mercians, and put him to flight.” The Mercian standard-bearer who carried the flag with a golden dragon on it was at some point killed by the lance of his Saxon rival and the battle entered history as the Battle of the Golden Dragon after the symbol dating all the way back to Uther Pendragon, King Arthur’s father. Visit this beautiful town and the picturesque countryside around it. And beware dragons!
