Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000)

The Countryside and Rights of Way Act (2000), also known as the 'Right to Roam', gives walkers access to thousands of acres of open country and registered common land in England and Wales. The Act defines open country as any area dominated by moor, heath, mountain or downland. Maps of the new access land produced by The Countryside Agency can be found here. The CRoW Act is being introduced on a regional basis, which is outlined below:

  • Lower North West - 19/09/04
  • South East - 19/09/04
  • Central Southern England - Dec 04
  • Upper North West - May 05
  • North East - May 05
  • South West - August 05
  • West of England - October 05
  • East of England - November 05
