For this night walk we will walk by moonlight at a leisurely pace from Abingdon to Oxford mostly along the Thames path\, passing several weirs and locks on the way. The night of the walk is just 24 hours before the full moon.

As the walk will follow the Thames path the terrain should be fairly even and thus the walk should be easy. However we may encounter some patches of mud (espec ially if it rains the week before). In addition to the usu al gear (good shoes\, waterproofs\, water and snacks) ple ase bring a torch in case the light of the moon is not enough to see the path.

The meet ing point will be at the bus stops on St Aldate's at 22:00 to take the X3 to Abingdon. Return to Oxford around 02:30 . A restaurant or pub for a pre-walk dinner at 20:00 will be announced later.

Note that if you live in east Oxford you will be able to leave the walk at Iffley Lock or Donnington Bridge. After about 5km we will reach the Ridgeway National Trail\, which we will then follow fo r most of the walk\, as far as Streatley-on-Thames\, before catching a return train from nearby Goring.

The first train to Oxford on Saturday morning leave s Goring at about 6am\, but if we finish too early then we have the option of extending the walk along the river to P angbourne\, adding another 6km.

If you opt to do this walk\, you sh ould be confident of being able to complete it\, as likely your only option for dropping out would be a very expensiv e taxi ride\, and you would be responsible both for the cos t of the taxi and for finding your way at night to a suita ble road\, possibly several kilometres away from the route. You must wear walking boots with good ankle suppo rt\, not trainers. You must also bring extra warm clothing \, waterproof jacket and overtrousers\, a torch\, and food an d drink. (There is a water tap after about 15.5km.)

Particularly if you are unsure a bout walking this distance at night\, you may wish to consi der first going on the less demanding night hike being held on 24th July.

To start the walk\, you catch the 20:0 0 bus to Wantage\, route 31\, from stop H4 on St Aldate's. It is up to you to catch this bus\, as the leader will be t ravelling separately to Wantage\, where he will arrive in t ime to meet you at Wantage Market Place where the bus term inates at about 20:45.

COSTS:

o utward bus: £3.80
return train: £5.90 (p robably £4.00 with rail card)
food: varia ble\, but for one place where we might eat\, see: Gigi's Italian Restaurant
