Welcome (Michaelmas 2009)

Hello, and welcome to a new term and a new year with the Walking Club! Whether you're a new or returning member, I hope you're keen to put your boots on for a term of walking!

We have three Weekend Trips planned for this term. At the end of 3rd week, Melanie will be going to the North Devon Coast, to explore Exmoor and its rugged coast. In 4th week Imogen heads to the Lake District, taking in some of England's finest peaks, including Helvellyn. Finally, at the end of 5th week Jaya John will go to Snowdonia, where there will be an extensive choice of some of the classic Welsh mountains to climb.

We also have two Minibus Day-trips planned. At the end of 2nd week Helen and Cristina will be going to the Black Mountains, in the Brecon Beacons in southern Wales. For something a little different, Rachel will be going to Avebury at the end of 7th week, to one of Britain's best known ancient stone circles.

The more informal Local Walks will take place every weekend, for those who want something a bit closer to Oxford. We start off with the Freshers' walks along the river, at the beginning of 1st week, as an introduction to the club. During term we'll be walking around Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds. These also offer an easy introduction to navigation and leading- contact Imogen, the archivist (archivist(a)ouwc.org) for more details on being a local walk leader.

The social highlight of the term is the Ceilidh, to be held at the end of 6th week. It should be great fun, and all abilities welcome!

All of this is only possible if volunteers help out. There are plenty of ways to help out in the club: weekend and minibus day trips require trip organisers, trip leaders, and minibus drivers. Without them, trips could not go ahead. Contact Jaya John (trip.safety(a)ouwc.org) if you want to organise or lead, and Rachel (secretary(a)ouwc.org) if you're available for driving. And finally, do consider getting involved on committee! Feel free to contact either myself (president(a)ouwc.org) or Rachel for further details.

I hope to see you all in the hills soon!
