Welcome (Michaelmas 2008)

Hello and welcome to our new members! Also, welcome back to existing members, I hope you all had a good summer vac and are ready to get out walking again!

We begin the year with our Fresher's Local Walks on Sunday 1st week, followed by Free Tea on Wednesday 1st week. This is a chance to sign up for weekend trips and minibus day trips. Local Walks continue every Saturday and Sunday during term time, giving you the chance to escape the city and explore other areas of Oxfordshire. There is no sign-up for these trips, just turn up at the given time and meeting place. You don't have to be a club member to go on local walks either, so bring your friends along too.

For this term's Weekend Trips, Jaya John and Barney firstly travel to Northern Snowdonia to explore the mountain scenery. At the end of 6th week, Dave and Andrew head to the ever popular Lakes, to hopefully climb Skiddaw and Jaya John and Helen end the term with a trip to the Brecon Beacons, the highest mountain range in Southern Britain.

If you can't quite manage a full weekend away, Jakub will be leading a Minibus Day Trip to the Black Mountains, within the Brecon Beacons national park.

Svitlana has organised a fun-packed Social Schedule for this term. Our major event this term is the annual CEILIDH at the end of 7th week. Hopefully you can all come along for an evening of dancing, with music provided by the Mouse and Trousers band. (Please note, dancing ability not required, as will be demonstrated by the committee!) Other socials include a pizza night, Halloween pumpkin hunt and bowling!

After much consideration, the club has decided to affiliate with the BMC from the start of this academic year for a trial period. This will hopefully enable us to encourage more members to undertake leading courses (see here for information on our trip leader training programme). As the limited number of trips for this term shows, we urgently need more leaders if we are to organise as many trips as in previous years. If you are interested in leading, talk to our trip and safety coordinator Dave (trip.safety(a)ouwc.org).

Although leader numbers are limited, we still have a huge amount of support from current leaders, drivers and the committee. So thank you to all those who have been able to volunteer to lead and organise trips, or drive minibuses. If you would like to become a minibus driver contact our secretary Laura (secretary(a)ouwc.org).

If you are interested in joining the committee or have any other questions or queries, don't hesitate to get in touch (president(a)ouwc.org). See you all soon!
