MT01 Welcome

March Into Michaelmas With OU Walking Club

A warm welcome back to Oxford to our existing members as well as those who are experiencing the Club for the first time. You've timed it well: this term sees an expansion of the Club with more walks than usual to complement an exciting new social calendar. There's no doubt that Oxford is a wonderful city in which to study. But occasionally we need to escape ... awaiting you is the Great British Countryside! From rolling meadows to impressive mountain scenery, from fast-flowing rivers to tumbling waterfalls, from spectacular coastline to beautiful moor-land, we simply have it all in our walks and trips!

There is a local walk every Saturday and Sunday during term-time. Explore Oxfordshire as well as the beautiful Cotswolds and Chilterns. You don't need to commit in advance to participating so simply turn up and enjoy a great walk in a great setting! We operate a subsidy scheme in which we give you some money back against the cost of the public transport, so it pays you to come along!

There are five Minibus trips this term, which will visit different English counties that are further away than the scope of a local walk. For just £6.50 you can have a day out at the Quantock Hills, the New Forest, the Roaches, the Dorset Coast or the Long Mynd. There are also Weekend Trips to six National Parks in England and Wales for just £30 or £35. Incredibly, this price includes transport to the National Park, accommodation for two nights and five generous meals. There are trips to Snowdonia, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and the Peak District. There are also two big trips to Pembrokeshire and to Dartmoor: in each case we have hired an entire Youth Hostel to accommodate us. This means that an incredible thirteen minibuses will head out of Oxford on behalf of the Club this term!

To sign up for Weekend and Minibus trips you should come to our 'Free Tea'. Put the date in your diaries now: Tuesday 9th October at 5:00pm in Wadham College Old Refectory. If you cannot make it then you must arrange to make payment to the Trip Leader by the end of 1st week as the trip places will then be allocated.

I am delighted to announce an exciting new social schedule. Meet in Wadham College Bar from 8:00pm every Wednesday in term-time, then at 9:00pm we will do something fun, such as a Bar Crawl, a Comedy Video Evening or the Club's first Halloween Party: you can see the Committee make a fool of themselves whilst in fancy dress! Finally, Michaelmas term would not be complete without our annual Ceilidh ... get on your dancing shoes and enjoy a great evening with live entertainment from the Mouse and Trousers: these events are not to be missed!

I hope you enjoy your experiences with OU Walking Club ... best wishes,

Richard Campbell,

President
